Shotokan Karate | 2015-Present (11 years)
I have trained in Shotokan karate for 11 years, committing to consistent, high-level physical and mental training alongside my academic pursuits. Since beginning as a white belt in 2015, I have progressed through the ranks to brown belt and am currently preparing to earn my black belt, expected in Winter 2025. This journey reflects not only technical advancement, but sustained discipline and resilience over more than a decade.
High-Level Athletic Training
Karate has required rigorous practice, precision, and continuous self-improvement. Advancing through the ranks demanded mastery of form, technique, and control under pressure—skills developed through years of structured training. Reaching the threshold of black belt represents near-professional proficiency and long-term commitment comparable to competitive athletics.
Sportsmanship & Character Development
Through karate, I have learned core values essential both in athletics and in life: sportsmanship, perseverance, cooperation, humility, and self-control. Training has taught me how to endure difficulty, remain focused under stress, and work respectfully with others toward shared goals.
Mindset Transfer to Academics and Research
The discipline cultivated through martial arts directly informs my academic and research pursuits. Patience, attention to detail, and the ability to persist through setbacks are fundamental both in the dojo and in scientific research. Karate has shaped the mindset I bring to medicine and research: one grounded in focus, integrity, and continuous improvement.
